About Geofré Heyns

Medico-legal Mediator | Surgeon & Expert Witness (Practicing)

Dr Geofré Heyns is a Bloemfontein-based general surgeon and traumatologist, and a medico-legal mediator and expert surgical witness, with more than 22 years’ experience in private practice. His long-standing clinical career—combined with extensive medico-legal exposure—gives him strong insight into medical negligence, personal injury, healthcare disputes, and expert witness matters, particularly where complex evidence, specialist reports, and high-stakes decision-making are involved. He is HPCSA-compliant and committed to exceptional patient and client care.
As a qualified mediator through Mediation Pan African (MPA), Dr Heyns brings a calm, structured, impartial, and facilitative approach to dispute resolution. He focuses on creating a safe and respectful process where each party can participate meaningfully, using clear ground rules, careful listening, and private sessions where appropriate—especially in matters involving high conflict or power imbalances. His background in trauma care equips him to remain composed under pressure, assess complex situations objectively, and guide parties toward practical, fair, and sustainable outcomes that are realistic and implementable, while limiting unnecessary delay and litigation cost.
Dr Heyns further strengthened his dispute resolution capability by completing the SAMLA Foundation Course (2025) with distinction. His professional credentials include International ATLS Trauma Instructor, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and Master of Laparoscopic/Keyhole Surgery (IRCAD/EITS, Strasbourg, France), as well as a Diploma in Anaesthesia from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
Based in the central region of South Africa, he is available for mediations in Bloemfontein and surrounding areas, the Free State, Lesotho, the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and the Central Karoo, and is prepared to travel or assist via virtual mediation where appropriate. In addition to healthcare, he holds specialist knowledge of the cattle farming industry as a Bonsmara cattle farmer (active since 2000 and well known within the Bonsmara Cattle Breeders Association), and was a finalist for Climate Ambassador Farmer of the Year (2026)—bringing a distinctive blend of clinical, analytical, and practical insight to both medico-legal and rural/agricultural-related disputes.
